PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT)

Houston, Texas

Procedures

PhotoDynamic Therapy is performed in conjunction with a topical application of aminolevulinic acid. PhotoDynamic Therapy delivers specific wavelengths of light to targeted tissue in the skin.

PhotoDynamic therapy is used to treat actinic keratoses, sundamaged skin, acne, warts, and many other diseases. The benefits of PDT over other treatment options are:

  • Fewer treatments
  • Minimal downtime
  • Reduced redness
  • Reduced wrinkle size
  • Reduced pore size
  • Smoother and healthier-looking skin

PhotoDynamic treatments are spaced at four to six week intervals. The number of treatments, treatment time, and treatment intervals will vary depending on the extent of the condition being treated. The process begins with application of the topical aminolevulinic acid with incubation (approximately 1-3 hours) prior to the PDT. A topical anesthetic will be applied prior to PDT to minimize any discomfort during treatment. Most people experience mild burning or itching for about one hour after the procedure, though this can last a day or two.

Mild to moderate redness may be experienced for 1-3 days.

Depending on the area treated, there may be swelling. This will subside within several hours. Application of ice or cold packs may help.

Peeling of treated skin may occur several days after the procedure and can be alleviated by gentle washing and application of gentle emollients.

After PDT, a small amount of activated substance remains in the skin for 48 hours. Sunlight and even indoor light may affect this and cause redness and itching. Use of sunscreen and a hat may diminish these undesired effects.
