Introduction

BOTOX® treatments are available in Houston by Dr. Paul M. Friedman to reduce horizontal creases in the forehead, frown lines and other areas of the face. The overall effect is a relaxed and smooth appearance.

BOTOX® has been used by physicians for 20 years to treat patients with certain medical conditions such as eye spasms, central nervous system disorders and excessive muscle contractions until a more recent use of BOTOX® to reduce wrinkles was discovered. Dr. Friedman of Houston, Texas has observed that BOTOX® is most effective in the upper third of the face (eyes and forehead) but other areas of the face and neck can be treated as well.

Removing fine lines and wrinkles

BOTOX® has been approved by the FDA for use by dermatologists and is very effective at removing fine lines on the forehead, the eyes and around the mouth. Although not a permanent solution for wrinkles, BOTOX® usually last from 3 to 6 months and can produce results that can be seen in as little as 48hrs.

In 2002, the FDA approved the use of BOTOX® for cosmetic uses to temporarily reduce facial wrinkles. Since that time, BOTOX® has received a great deal of publicity. BOTOX®, however, has been an FDA approved treatment for muscle disorders of the eye since 1989.

Botulinum toxin is a natural substance secreted by the bacterium that causes botulism. BOTOX® works by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the junction of the nerves and muscles. This is the chemical that signals muscles to contract. Blocking the acetylcholine results in the temporary relaxation of the targeted muscles. As a result, this is an effective treatment for muscle spasms, facial spasms & spasticity with relief for up to 3 – 4 months. It is also being used to treat Parkinsonism, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke and Cerebral Palsy patients helping them to regain muscle control.

Migraine & Tension Headaches

Currently BOTOX® is being used as a treatment for migraine & tension headaches. Doctors discovered this new use for BOTOX® when patients reported fewer headaches after receiving BOTOX® for cosmetically reducing wrinkles. BOTOX® effectively relaxes the muscles involved in triggering headaches and reduces their frequency & severity. It is now one of the main preventive therapies for headaches, with a very high rate of success.

For the treatment of headaches, BOTOX® is injected into muscles around the eyes, forehead and the back of the neck. Significant improvements appear to be progressive and may also be cumulative. Results improve with the second and third treatments if the first treatment has only had a mild effect. Treatment may be repeated as often as every three months. BOTOX® has been shown to have little or no side effects
