General Skin Care

Taking good care of your skin is just as important as brushing your teeth and eating well. If you properly care for your skin, you will feel more comfortable, confident, and healthy. No one enjoys having itchy, dry, or oily skin, so establish a daily routine that will help you feel your best.

Your skin type

You should evaluate what kind of skin you have before deciding how you will care for it. Is your skin dry and sensitive, or is it oily and prone to breakouts? Depending on your skin type, your skin care routine will be different. Pay attention to your skin as you try different products. Do certain lotions seem to moisturize especially well or do certain soaps dry your skin out too much? Knowing what works well with your skin will make your skin care routine easy.

Basic care

A daily skin care routine does not have to be complicated. Most people find it easy to work a quick routine into their schedule. Even if you are very busy, the long and short-term benefits of a daily skin care routine are well worth the time it takes each day to clean and moisturize.

Starting and maintaining a daily skin care regimen consists of two steps:

  • A gentle cleanser on your face every day
  • Lotion or cream to hydrate your skin and keep it soft and smooth

Keeping your skin clean will prevent breakouts and help keep the pores small. Keeping it moisturized will help prevent those fine lines and wrinkles that start to develop as we age. If you've been rather neglectful in the past, you can still compensate for that by starting a good regular routine now. You might also want to consider some cosmetic dermatology treatments, such as laser toning or a chemical peel.

Dry skin

If your skin is dry, use an especially mild cleanser to prevent it drying out even further. A harsh cleanser can cause it to break out, or become painful and sensitive. To help hydrate it, try soaking in lukewarm water, but not in hot water. Hot water will not hydrate your skin - it will dry it out more. If you take long, hot showers or baths, you may be drying your skin out more than you think. After a lukewarm soak, apply a lotion or cream immediately to lock in the moisture from your soak. Some people find that creams work better than lotions. You can experiment and see what products work best for your unique skin.

Oily skin

If your skin is oily, use an oil-based cleanser as these are most effective for dissolving sebum. Washing with hot water helps to dissolve oil and can help prevent pores from clogging. An oil-free moisturizer should be applied after cleansing. Avoid harsh products, which tend to strip the skin of natural oils, encourage flakiness, and can cause your skin to produce excessive sebum to compensate. Look for products that contain benzyl peroxide as an active ingredient. Try using a deep-cleaning exfoliant on alternate nights and following the treatment with a light moisturizer. Some people combine the use of an antiseptic night cream with the use of a mask once a week. Try using different combinations of products until you discover the skincare regime that works best for you. The Smoothbeam laser is another option in the treatment of oily skin.

Sun exposure

It is essential to get some sun exposure in order to soak up vitamin D, but too much sun can lead to discomfort, pain, and long-term problems. If you do not apply enough sunscreen, your skin will burn. Sunburn is a skin injury, like any other type of burn. It can be painful and will lead to flaking and peeling as the skin heals. Severe sunburn will cause blisters that will be especially painful.

If you are exposed to too much sun or don't protect your skin adequately with sunscreen, wrinkles will develop more quickly. We can't entirely avoid the wrinkling that comes with age, but we can certainly minimize it. Why not take a little time each day to care for your skin and keep it as smooth and youthful as possible?

Proper skin care will help you look and feel the best you can. If you are faithful about cleaning and moisturizing your skin each day, it will continue to look youthful, healthy, and attractive for years to come.
